One person was shot on a Long Island Rail Road train in Bellport this morning, two sources tell News 12.
The sources said a man was standing on the platform at the Bellport station boarding an eastbound train from Jamaica to Montauk when a group of four people exited the train. One person in that group turned and fired at the people boarding the train and struck the victim in his right shoulder.
Around 2:25 a.m., MTA police received calls about an injured person on the train and met it at the next stop, which was Mastic-Shirley, sources said. That's where officers found the victim with a gunshot wound.
The victim was treated there and taken to NYU Langone Hospital - Suffolk in Patchogue and released.
The MTA police are leading the investigation and had scenes at both stations.
Officers at Mastic-Shirley were seen walking on the platform and down the tracks towards a train that was off to the side. Detectives at Bellport were using dogs to search the ground along the tracks and underneath the platform.
The incident initially suspended service on the Montauk Branch between Speonk and Patchogue ahead of the morning rush, but trains slowly got back online with delays throughout the morning.
Sources said the shooter and other members of the group fled the Bellport station and MTA police are still searching for them.
