Pedestrians in Hicksville faced dangerous walking conditions outside the Broadway Commons Mall after snow and ice were left uncleared following Sunday’s storm.
A thick layer of snow and ice covered the sidewalk along North Broadway in front of the mall, making it especially difficult for people trying to reach a nearby bus stop. The area appeared not to have been shoveled days after the snowfall.
According to the Town of Oyster Bay, property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property, while NICE Bus is responsible for maintaining and clearing bus stops. Despite those guidelines, the sidewalk and bus stop area remained slippery, forcing pedestrians to navigate hazardous conditions.
News 12 observed several people struggling to walk along the icy stretch, including a senior citizen who relies on the bus for transportation. Jean Clark, 85, of Westbury, said the conditions left her fearful of falling.
“It’s scary because I could fall easily, so I have to try to hold onto something,” Clark said. “They could put salt on it and it wouldn’t be so slippery, but it’s not melting because it’s still too cold.”
Mall management initially told News 12 they were unsure who was responsible for shoveling the sidewalk. However, a crew sent by the mall was later seen clearing the area Tuesday evening.
A spokesperson for NICE Bus told News 12 workers would shovel the bus stop.
