A law going into effect this Saturday will change the way New Jersey food businesses and customers operate.
The Skip the Stuff law prohibits establishments from handing out single-use plastic utensils and condiments unless customers ask for them.
The law, enacted in January as New Jersey Senate Bill 3195, aims to reduce unnecessary plastic waste and litter.
It applies to restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, diners, food trucks, drive-thrus and food delivery services.
Certain establishments are exempt, such as private schools, healthcare facilities, correctional facilities and food court vendors.
Businesses who fail to comply first get a warning, then a $100 fine followed by a $250 penalty.
Money accrued from the penalties will be deposited into the Clean Communities Program Fund.
