After more than 75 years, Preston High School announced that it will close its doors at the end of this school year, and News 2's Ali Morilo is in Throg's neck with reaction from students and more on a petition that already has thousands of signatures. I put a VHS. Preston Pride echoed through locked gates today as students tried to grapple what they're calling a sudden nightmare. The board of trustees says financial struggles and declining enrollment are to blame despite efforts to purchase the property and lengthy negotiations. The school couldn't secure a sustainable future. now forced to close its doors at the end of the. I'm supposed to be looking for colleges. I'm supposed to be touring colleges. I'm not supposed to be calling my mom frantically saying, Where am I gonna go? Students now left to reflect on the impact Preston has left through educators and staff, thousands of signatures already behind a petition to save the school. For many, it's more than just a historical landmark. Closure has ignited a fight they don't plan on giving up. Everyone wants to try to come together to try to bring light to the situation and to see how we can help Preston out. Maybe there's something we could do to try to save it, to keep it open. Parents and students are set to rally outside of the school tomorrow morning at Preston High School, Ely Murillo, News 12, the Bronx.

Students and parents, they are fighting Preston High School's plan to close at the end of the school year. Newswell's Brittany Cadet, she's in Throg's neck with more on the action they're taking, Brittany. Well, class is now in session after a rally was held outside of Preston High School earlier this morning. It was held by faculty members, students, and alumni who once attended the school. Now this rally comes just days after a shocking announcement was made that the school is planning on closing in June. He made me the person that I am today. I'm a nurse practitioner in the Bronx and I live down the block and it means everything. Emotions were high at Preston High School this morning. The very least that they could have done is at least let the kids who are already in the school is let them graduate. Generations of alumni stood in solidarity with current students, parents, and school faculty. 2003. My mother was class of 2 1973. My aunt was 1974. My other aunt was 1977, and my niece here is going to be 2032. Preston High School has stood tall in the throngs next section of the Bronx for about 75 years. The school's board of trustees says last year there were considerations to put the property on the market. And the board indicated Preston's desire to purchase it, but it just didn't work out. They also cited financial struggles and declining enrollment, but many who go here say they don't believe that's the reason, and they're taking away all our Catholic schools in this neighborhood, and they're building condos and casinos that we don't need, and we need to save Preston. An online petition was also put together by a student here at Preston High School, and it has already reached more than 5000 signatures. For now we're here at Preston High School in the Bronx.
