Union leaders and workers rallied with Gov. Mikie Sherrill and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to demand the release of approved federal funding for the Gateway Tunnel Project.
The rally took place at the Tonnelle Avenue construction site in North Bergen, NJ, where workers gathered to push to get the project back on track.
Sherrill told the crowd she plans to be a “tunnel-obsessed governor” after serving as a “tunnel-obsessed congresswoman.”
She said the project goes beyond construction jobs.“This project is important,” Sherrill said. “It’s not just important to you or your families but important to the many moms and dads to get home in time to pick up their kids from their day-care, to make it to dinner or to their kids basketball games.”
Schumer warned of serious consequences if the tunnel project is delayed. “If this tunnel were to collapse, and it will if we don’t build a new one, there will be a recession and a depression in New York, New Jersey and all America,” Schumer said.
Workers at the rally called on the president to release Gateway Tunnel funds that have already been approved.
