The sheriff's office in Queens was searched by the Department of Investigation on Thursday.
This comes after News 12 learned that Sheriff Anthony Miranda found tens of thousands of dollars of unreported cash inside of a safe.
The DOI is now investigating whether or not the sheriff's office improperly seized the cash that was taken from illegal smoke shops.
A City Hall spokesperson says that it appears that Miranda found the money and reported it himself prior to his supervisors reporting the found cash to the Department of Investigation.
City Hall went on to add that "they expect every city employee to follow proper procedures".
