A former Fairfield Preparatory School student has reached a $1.1 million settlement with Fairfield University on behalf of Fairfield Prep and the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus over allegations that he was sexually abused by a teacher for several years, according to his attorney.
Attorney Mitchell Garabedian announced the settlement was reached in August on behalf of a male survivor who alleges he was abused by a Fairfield Prep teacher between about 2001 and 2005 while he was a student at the school.
According to the attorney, the alleged abuse began when the student was 15 and continued until he was 18. The survivor alleges the abuse occurred more than 200 times at multiple locations, including the teacher's apartment in Bridgeport, on the Fairfield University campus, at Fairfield Prep and during a school service trip to Appalachia.
The attorney said the relationship ended when the student became increasingly troubled by the situation and began distancing himself from the teacher.
The survivor alleges the abuse caused ongoing emotional injuries.
Garabedian said a civil complaint has not been filed in the matter. A police report was filed with the Fairfield Police Department, according to the release.
The survivor is not expected to comment publicly and wishes to remain anonymous.
