Police are still searching for 23-year-old Matthew Zoll, who is accused of killing his father, Joseph Zoll, in their Rocky Point home earlier this month.
Authorities have focused their search on a large, wooded area spanning more than 1,600 acres near key roads, such as the William Floyd Parkway, Route 25A and Middle Country Road. The search, which began on Nov. 9, has put neighboring communities on edge.
Suffolk County police have provided few details about the investigation, but it was revealed that Zoll is believed to have crashed an SUV at the intersection of 25A and William Floyd Parkway, injuring himself.
Since then, the department has offered minimal information to the public.
David Sarni, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, explained the methodical nature of the search.
"You start from the point where the vehicle was located, then expand. It’s a detailed grid search where you go step-by-step through the area," he says.
However, the lack of communication from authorities has raised concerns among some residents.
“Nobody has said one word. Not one word. And that’s a little disconcerting,” said Debra Lang, of Wading River. "Inform the public of what’s going on," she urged.
Police declined a request for an interview, but confirmed they were actively searching the area once again on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of Joseph Zoll.
A wake for the victim was held Tuesday night, and his funeral is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
