Freezing temperatures didn’t stop fans from lining up outside Jersey Mike’s Arena on Saturday morning — not only for the Rutgers‑Nebraska game, but for a collectible they had been waiting for.
Fans gathered for a limited‑edition One Piece trading card, part of the US Voyage promotion, which gives away exclusive cards and merchandise at select college basketball games.
“I’ve been watching One Piece since I was five,” said Rishi, a Rutgers student. “Seeing everyone here who loves it too, it’s amazing.”
Many fans, including Arnell, braved the cold early for a chance to get the card.
“Twenty degrees out, got to get that cardboard somehow,” he said.
The excitement comes just days after Rutgers University Police reported a burglary inside the arena, where collectible cards were stolen from a secured office. Police said no one was hurt and the investigation is ongoing.
“Shady,” one fan said of the theft. “You don’t have to steal it — just wait in line like everyone else.”
Fans showed up early to make sure they left with a card. “It’s been hard to find these in stores. It’s like Pokémon all over again,” another said.
University police continue investigating the burglary. No arrests have been made.
