The Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center continues to serve as a cornerstone of Poughkeepsie's cultural community.

The center is housed in a restored historic building that was originally known as the Brothers Institute for Arts, Literature and Science. The building was constructed in 1882.

Executive Director J. Andrew Burgreen said Charlotte Canning Hackett and John Hackett established a trust fund that made it possible to restore the buildings.

“Charlotte Canning Hackett and John Hackett. They were attorneys in Poughkeepsie. They established a trust fund that was able to restore these two buildings. There's a quite a bit to learn about the history here,” Burgreen said.

The arts center offers exhibitions, live performances, educational programs and special events.

Visitors can explore four galleries featuring works from local and regional artists. Exhibits rotate every two months.

“This is the reception gallery. Artists that come here every two months, that use the galleries. This is the Hancock Gallery over here. This exhibits that change, every two months,” Burgreen said.

The center also offers activities including adult ballet classes for beginner and intermediate dancers.

Its historic theater hosts musical performances, plays and children's workshops.

“People call this the hidden gem of Poughkeepsie,” Burgreen said.

“The acoustics are incredible. It was designed for chamber music and lectures,” he said.

The arts center's sister building across the street is home to a variety of businesses and programs.

“We have massage therapists, we have Reiki, we have martial arts, jujitsu. The artists support each other. And it's really a great place to feel like you're a part of the community,” Burgreen said.
