The Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum in Poughkeepsie is helping children explore science through hands-on learning and interactive exhibits.

Located along the Hudson River, the museum has welcomed families since 2002 and focuses on giving children opportunities to learn by doing.

Executive Director Jeff Sasson says the goal is to spark curiosity while building confidence and social skills.

“Discovery Museum is a place for children and families to come to learn about science,” Sasson said.

The museum features two floors of exhibits designed for different age groups.

The first floor caters primarily to younger children, with attractions including a train station-themed climbing area, a firehouse and a play cafe.

Sasson says those exhibits help children learn how to socialize, build confidence and interact with others who share their interests.

The second floor features interactive exhibits that introduce visitors to topics such as magnetism, chemistry and astronomy.

The museum also offers demonstrations, planetarium programs and special events designed to encourage children to explore science beyond their visit.

“We do what schools don’t do,” Sasson said. “Hands-on doing is the best way to learn.”

Families say the museum keeps them coming back.

“We love it here. We’ve been here several other times, and she really loves it,” one parent said.

Sasson says the ultimate goal is to inspire a lifelong love of learning.

“When they’re leaving, two things happen. Either they’re crying because they don’t want to leave, or they’re skipping,” he said. “That’s what we’re here to do — spark imagination and create lifelong learners.”

ROAD TRIP From a firehouse and train station for younger children to science exhibits for all ages, the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum has something for everyone.
