Our Road Ready series takes us to Cypress Hills this week, where we examined one of the neighborhood's most congested intersections: Atlantic Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Earlier this year, a
six-car collision at the intersection left four people injured. Drivers familiar with the area know how easily traffic can get stuck in the intersection's "box," often causing a chaotic scene. Sometimes, as drivers attempt to cross, the light changes, and oncoming traffic moves in, creating dangerous conditions.
The corner's EZ Pawn staff regularly witness accidents, with one employee recounting a disturbing incident: "I've seen a lady in a wheelchair get hit. She got tossed right out of it."
According to city data, 18 people have been injured at the intersection in 2024. In 2023, that number was 29, and in 2022 it was 45. News 12 reached out to the city's Department of Transportation to see if they have any plans to conduct a safety assessment of the intersection, but we have yet to receive a response.
