Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican congresswoman from South Carolina, is calling for Democratic New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver to be expelled from Congress following assault charges filed against McIver earlier this week.

“Members of Congress don’t get a free pass to break the law. No one is above the law — not even you, LaMonica,” Mace wrote in a post on X.

McIver is facing up to eight years in prison following an altercation at Delaney Hall – an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Newark.

The incident happened on May 9. Prosecutors say McIver assaulted an ICE agent following the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka outside the facility. McIver was charged with two counts of assaulting, resisting and impeding an officer.

In response to Mace’s post regarding an expulsion from Congress, McIver wrote on X, “In the South I think they say, ‘bless her heart.’”

McIver is expected to be back in court on June 11.
