District 15 Rep. Ritchie Torres announced his endorsement for former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
News 12 exclusively reported Andrew Cuomo will be running for New York City mayor, according to multiple sources.
Three months ahead of the primary, and before Cuomo's official announcement, Ritchie Torres pledged his support for the former governor.
"I feel like Gov. Andrew Cuomo is uniquely positioned to offer the kind of steady, stable, strong leadership that we urgently need in a moment of crisis. You know, for me, the two most important virtues in political leadership are competence and courage," said Torres.
In a one-on-one interview, News 12 reporter Marissa Santorelli asked Rep. Torres if the sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo would impact him in the polls.
"In America, there is a presumption of innocence. There is due process of law. But rather than relitigate the past, we have to look forward to the future," Torres responded.
Torres said Cuomo's experience in Albany will put him at an advantage as New York City mayor.
"He can run the city effectively because he has done it before as the governor of New York," he said.
Torres attributed his endorsement to the lack of leadership in the city.
"Look, there's been a loss of confidence in Mayor Adams. You know, there's concern that his ability to govern has been compromised. He's too beholden to Donald Trump. He's been ineffective at managing the city. And so there's no doubt in my mind that the people of the Bronx would overwhelmingly side with Andrew Cuomo."
Andrew Cuomo nor his campaign have yet to release an official announcement. Multiple sources tell New 12 it is expected by the end of the month.
News 12 asked Torres about his rumored run for governor in 2026. Torres said he will make a final decision by the end of the mayoral race.
