Members of the Red Cross' emergency team returned to a Deer Park apartment complex that caught fire Sunday afternoon, displacing dozens of tenants. A small team of volunteers provided food and mental health support.
The agency said it provided emergency housing to eight people, including one child. The remaining number of displaced residents decided to stay with friends or family.
The Red Cross said 56 apartments in total were affected by fire, smoke and water damage, as well as utilities being shut off.
The fire started at the Maple Crest Garden Apartment complex at 467 Baldwin Path in Deer Park yesterday, around noon.
Deer Park fire officials said it took about 75 firefighters just under an hour to get the fire out.
One firefighter was hospitalized, though every resident was able to get out safely.
This same building in the complex caught fire back in 2023. Several residents who were affected by that fire still lived in the building when Sunday's fire started.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
