Yonkers - It’s time to sound the alarm.
Fires are a familiar danger in Yonkers—from last week’s massive apartment blaze to smaller house fires. Officials say getting out quickly can make all the difference.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross are taking action, going door-to-door across Yonkers to install free smoke alarms in homes.
The effort is part of the Red Cross Sound the Alarm campaign, focused on improving fire safety. More than 80 volunteers are participating, learning how to properly install smoke alarms and educate residents on how to prevent fires—and survive them if they happen.
“Volunteers are gathering here today, then we’ll descend out here into Yonkers and reach into homes and make them safer,” said Frederic Klein of the American Red Cross. “It’s nice to be somewhere before disaster strikes. A lot of the time we’re responding after a home fire. So, to get into a home before disaster strikes to help everybody be ready, it’s just a really lovely feeling.”
