A Queens man has been taken into police custody after he poured a flammable liquid on himself in front of a Nassau police station in Elmont.
Nassau police say a 25-year-old female victim of a domestic incident was exiting the Fifth Precinct at 10:50 p.m. on Friday when she saw the subject of the domestic incident, Paul McEwen, about to enter. The victim then ran back into the precent to request help from police.
While McEwen, 50, was standing in the vestibule of the police station, he started to pour a flammable liquid over his entire body, according to police. Two officers and one detective then entered the vestibule and tackled McEwen to the ground.
He was then transported to a hospital for an evaluation. A Nassau police officer was injured during the incident.
McEwen is charged with assault, attempted arson and criminal contempt. He will be arraigned at the First District Court in Hempstead when medically practical.
