It's slow going for drivers in East Rockaway as PSEG Long Island closed lanes on multiple roads for construction.
Tara Bassi, from Long Beach, takes Atlantic Avenue every day on her commute to work.
"I've been running late in the morning, it's so hard to get through it, there's no control of the traffic, it's insane," she said.
PSEG says crews are replacing an old underground transmission cable and other equipment, doing work on Atlantic Avenue, Access Road and Lawson Boulevard.
Oscar and Neris Maldonado are brothers who own a deli on Atlantic Avenue right near the train and the construction.
They say usually there's a lunch rush, but not since the work started earlier this month.
"Business is a little slow because the cars it's not easy to come inside," said Neris Maldonado, co-owner of Great Deli Restaurant.
According to PSEG, the new cable running from East Rockaway to Valley Stream will help prevent power outages during storms.
"We understand the traffic concerns in the area, we're asking for your patience in that area as we continue to work. We are working around the clock," said Katy Tatzel, with PSEG Long Island.
PSEG says it has crews working 24/7 to get the project done as fast as possible. It says work will continue over the next few months. It expects the project to be complete in April.
PSEG Long Island says service will not be interrupted for customers during the project.
