Some Suffolk residents say they're outraged at the possibility of a battery energy storage system being built in Hauppauge, saying it would be a hazard to the community.

As News 12 reported, LIPA and Key Capture Energy plan to build the facility on Rabro Drive and Route 111, promoting clean energy.

It's one of several proposed battery energy storage systems across Long Island.

Protesters gathered in front of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Hauppauge Friday, where Long Island lawmakers met for an economic policy forum.

"While KCE recognizes residents have concerns, battery energy storage systems are safe. These systems are designed and constructed following extremely rigorous international and national standards," said Key Capture Energy.

The Town of Islip says there is a moratorium on the proposed battery storage facility until September 2026, effectively putting the project on hold for now.

Those who are against the facility say the area is too busy for something like this to be built in Hauppauge.

Hauppauge Fire Commissioner Scott Munro points to the multiple fires that broke out at a similar battery storage system in Orange County.

He says if the facility must be built, it should be away from businesses, homes and schools.

"It's not that we're against renewables, we're not against these altogether, we're just against where they're putting it here in Hauppauge," said Munro.

In a statement to News 12, LIPA said:

“LIPA supports the development of battery energy storage as a key part of an affordable, reliable, clean electric grid. Safety remains our highest priority at all times, and with the recent adoption of New York’s updated Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, which includes substantial training for first responders, LIPA believes battery energy storage systems can be built and operated securely. We look forward to continuing productive conversations with the Town of Islip and others on the benefits of battery energy storage systems."
