And first tonight, some clarity now into this week's police involved shooting in Bridgeport. One man killed. The state office of the Inspector General is out now with a preliminary report and body camera footage. News 12 Connecticut's Greg Thompson is at Bridgeport police headquarters tonight. Greg, what did this report say? Yes, that preliminary report and the video pretty much back up what police had originally said. They got a call. There had been a fight and that someone involved with it had a gun in a black Chevy Tahoe. They say they tracked down that truck and started questioning the people inside of it, including a man in the passenger seat who they said they needed to pat down to try and find that gun. it's quick and then we'll let you go. Then you can see that man who's now been identified as Dashawn Best appear to reach for something out of his belt and run off with a liquor bottle in one hand and what looks like a gun in the other hand as officers try to taser him and get him to stop. It was only after following him down a driveway on Cassuth Street. Police say they saw the gun. Also saying that they did find a handgun on the ground next to him. 3 shots fired. After looking at both the report and the video, Best's family says they're not convinced that officers needed to shoot him. This is sick. He was a good guy and he did not deserve this to happen to him the way it did. I believe my brother was scared, but I see my brother get out of that car. I just seen it on his face like, oh man, I believe that's why he ran. With the family's lawyer arguing that a possible gun possession charge isn't enough for officers to pull the trigger. This is what you get a warrant for and you do your investigation and then you arrest people accordingly. You don't become the judge, jury, executioner. What I viewed on the video. Um, as I know, use of force, as I know training appears to be in line with the training and what the use of force policy set forth. We asked the chief exactly what the training and protocol are for a situation like that, but he said he couldn't get into details. The ultimate decision will come from the Inspector General's office, and they will be the final determinant of whether it was justified or not justified shooting. Now the officer who pulled the trigger is currently on paid administrative leave and will stay there until the investigation is over, which is standard protocol. Meanwhile, Best's family says they are going to be prayer vigils and protests here over the next few days in Bridgeport, Greg Thompson, News 12, Connecticut.

We want justice. A crowd gathering outside the Bridgeport Police Department tonight. More than 100 people coming together at the Bridgeport Police Memorial across the street one day after officials say a Bridgeport police officer shot and killed a local man following a foot chase along Casuth Street. The office of the Connecticut Inspector General is now investigating the case. Good evening. I'm Roxanne Evans. Meantime, the family of the man who was killed is demanding answers tonight. They spoke with News 12 Connecticut's Frank Recchia, who's been following the story and has this update. This was 100% avoidable. Family of 38 year old DaShawnests coming together. The family is heartbroken. We're heartbroken. One day after their loved one was killed in a police involved shooting, he was a loving father, was making the proper changes in his life to do better and be better. Police say it all began here on the east side just before 6 Monday night. Dayan fatally shot by a Bridgeport police officer in the 1400 block of Casuth Street. They were called there, officials say, on reports of a fight, including people who were allegedly carrying firearms. They say a person in a suspect vehicle referring to Daan jumped out of the car and engaged police in a foot chase during the course of which they say the fatal shooting took place. We want answers. We are not gonna forget this. We are not gonna stop. We need justice for Dashon. I'm broken inside, you know. Yesterday I was sounding a little bit more clear, but I, I went home and, and cried, you know, cause that was somebody, you know, for, for my age, from my era. Somebody who the family says was a full-time truck driver, worked hard to change his life, focused on building a life with his family. He loved his kids. 18 wheeler sitting idle a day after his death. I did the funeral yesterday that they attended, and he was a pallbearer at the funeral. The family says Dashon had just gotten back to Bridgeport to attend the funeral of a childhood friend. They say he then went to a venue on the east side for the repast, and that they say, is when the fight broke out, but they say Dashon had nothing to do with it. He was nobody's thug, nobody's thug. He literally just came from Arkansas the day before yesterday. The family's attorney Darnell Crossland, who. Says he'll conduct an independent probe telling us this family deserves to know why their loved one was shot down in the streets of Bridgeport. We will not rest until we get the truth. The state inspector general has taken over the investigation. This family pledging to follow it closely. We need answers and we need justice for my baby brother in Bridgeport, Frank Recchia, News 12, Connecticut. Police say the officer or officers involved will be assigned to modified duty pending the outcome of the inspect inspector General's investigation.
