A World Cup tax is being considered in Trenton that would raise the sales tax by 3% during the tournament in some areas near the Meadowlands, where many tourists are expected to watch matches this summer.
Republicans say the proposal would burden New Jersey residents, even if they are able to write off the added cost.
"What kind of idiot thinks of this stuff? Who's gonna remember to save all the receipts when they go to buy M&Ms at the corner store, you save your receipt to get that money back?" said Assemblyman Brian Bergen, the Republican minority whip.
"I mean it's not well thought out, it's stupid and it's another tax just on the heels of Governor Mikie Sherrill saying there will be no sales tax increase well here it is."
The proposal could also add extra fees on hotels, rideshares and gambling.
