Welcome back. A major redevelopment plan in Rononoma has taken a new course of action. Suffolk County cut ties with the developer set to work on the new $2.8 million Midway crossing project. County leaders say the real estate company JLL wasn't making progress toward hiring staff. And arranging financing as we've reported, the project would have built potentially a convention center, a 300 room hotel, a new MacArthur Airport terminal on county owned land south of the Rononoma train station. Suffolk officials say they do plan to seek new proposals for that site. And you'll soon be able to fly to another destination out of Long Island's MacArthur Airport. JetBlue announced the new nonstop flight to Boston. Only during the summer they'll start with there will be one flight there, one flight back every day, and service begins at the end of April. Right now JetBlue flies to Orlando, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale from the Rononoa Airport. Joining us now to talk more about this is Islip Tow supervisor Angie Carpenter. Good to see you, Angie. Thanks for coming in. Rich. Thank you so much. All right, so let's talk midway first. Obviously this uh plan this project's seen different iterations over the years. What's the latest? What do you want to see happen here? Well, we certainly want to see something happen. I mean, the potential is huge and people throw that word transformational around. This really is transformational. The opportunity to create something like this that's going to have the kind of high paying jobs that we keep talking about that we need here to keep our young people here on Long Island is what this is going to do. Uh, luckily, uh, the county executive Ed Romain is totally committed to seeing this happen. Uh, he was very disappointed that things were not moving along as quickly as he felt they should, so he tied, you know, cut ties, as you said, with the developer, and right now they're working on an RFEI. Uh, request for expressions of interest and it's, you know, broader than an RFP, you know, or a bid, it's going out there and, and asking the development community, you know, what ideas do you have out there? I mean there could be ideas there that we haven't even thought about, so it's really very exciting. It's on a fast track as far as the county execs concerned and uh you know I'm very grateful for that. He's been a tremendous partner. To the town, I, I, I guess because he was a town supervisor understands what it is and uh is willing to work with us on, on anything that we bring to him. So it's county land but it's town zoning is that actually it's county, it's airport property. It's town, uh, there's a mix there, but the town controls the zoning on the entire property. So do you feel that, uh, your administration and county. Executive Romain will be able to be in lockstep on on how to move forward once those bids come in. Uh, I really do believe that. I know the town board, we pulled the town board, we wanna make sure that we're all in lockstep on what we would like to see there, and I think everyone agrees, you know, there are certain things we don't want we don't want a warehouse. I mean, we want the best and and most productive use of the property. And the kind of of uh industrial uses not industry not uh we certainly don't want type 2 industry but uh the kind of businesses that generate those high paying jobs, life sciences, uh, you know, biotech research, uh, you know, we're very much in line especially with the fact that the airport is right there, uh, and that we are very much um. Serious about moving the terminal to the north adjacent to the railroad, the fact that the state has invested so much money in East Side access, uh, you know, third track, bringing more people coming out from the city and how beneficial it is to be able to get on a train, get off at Ron Cooma, the busiest train station in the system outside of Jamaica. Uh, and get over to the airport, you know, right, and, and I would think that a vibrant airport only makes this more appealing to developers and when you look at the situation with JetBlue now adding flights, um, they've got to work hand in hand, I would think, right? They do, and, uh, you know, the airport has been a real success story. Uh, when I got there we had one airline now we have 4. Um, and we are still far below capacity for what could be there. Uh, we certainly don't ever want to do anything that's negatively gonna impact the community that surrounds the airport. We're never aiming to be LaGuardia or JetBlue, but we are a regional airport that has a lot of capacity, and JetBlue saw that when I met with uh JetBlue, I said to them, uh, you know, you must have flights that are going out of JFK that aren't profitable, that aren't full. If you come to our airport, I guarantee that we'll fill those seats and uh they were out shortly after that announcing that they were going to commence service at Islip and just recently I was on a Zoom call with the leadership team of JetBlue and they told me that the flights out of Islip Airport became profitable faster than in any other airport they've been in, but the community is there. I mean, for years people have wanted this, right? I tell you that the most asked question I have received over the years now I've been at the town it'll be 10 years in March, is why don't we have JetBlue? When are we getting JetBlue? Like I was stopping it, you know, so it was very exciting for me, uh, to be able to make that announcement and just yesterday I got um. Another email from the air service manager and he said, oh, more good news coming. The Fort Lauderdale flights are gonna be daily, uh, starting, uh, in April, and all of the flights out there will be daily starting in April to Florida. So a little news on power and we absolutely, absolutely, and the, the flight to Boston, I don't think people realize how beneficial that's going to be because right now if you're going to Europe you're gonna go to JFK. Right, you're gonna schlep. God knows how long, you know, it may take you an hour to get there and maybe an hour and a half to get your terminal because of the construction that's going on. You can get on a flight at Islip Airport, park conveniently, safely right now they're offering a $49 fare to Boston and at Logan Airport, which I never been, but I understand it's a very easy airport to navigate, much like ours. You can fly nonstop to 8 destinations in Europe. You can fly to the West Coast. You can fly to Vegas. So you know, think about it, you know, it, it might be the the thing to do. Welcome back. Democrats and Republicans joined Congressman Nick Lalota to once again address what they say is an urgent need for state and local tax deductions on Long Island. President Trump set the salt deduction cap at $10,000 as part of a Republican tax bill when he took office the first time in 2017. Earlier this month, a bipartisan bill was introduced to repeal the cap. We need more salt here on Long Island because it's so damn expensive to live here. Lolota says if Salt relief is not in the budget, he'll vote no on the spending plan. The man who represented Long Island's first congressional district before Nick Lolota now leads the Environmental Protection Agency. The yays are 56, the nays are 42, the nomination is confirmed. The Senate did confirm Lee Zeldin's nomination last week with the vote falling mostly along party lines. The former Shirley congressman is expected to play a key role in helping President Trump fulfill his promise of rolling back environmental regulations that are deemed harmful to the economy. Meanwhile, Jericho native Howard Lutnick testified before the Senate Commerce Committee. The Cantor Fitzgerald chairman and CEO is President Trump's pick for Commerce secretary. The billionaire businessman defended the president's planned tariffs on international imports. A particular products price may go up, but all of them, this is not inflationary. It is just a nonsense that tariffs cause inflation. It is nonsense. Lutnick said he would sell off all of his business holdings within 90 days if confirmed, and a confirmation hearing was also held on Cash Patel's nomination for FBI director. The Garden City native was grilled by the Senate Judiciary Committee, the former federal. Prosecutor at the Justice Department told senators he will not seek retribution against President Trump's adversaries. He also said he disagreed with the commutations of some of those convicted for the January 6 Capitol riot. He and Ludnick's nominations require full Senate approval. The man who could lead the Suffolk Police Department is one step closer to the job. First Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina appeared in front of the county legislature's Public Safety Committee. He was questioned on his vision for the police force and how he would make it happen. Person. What I'd like to do and and you know uh what I expect my people to do is to be out there interacting with the community developing relationships um listening to the community to figure out what it is that we can do better to serve them. The full legislature will vote on Catalina's nomination this Tuesday.
