The economic landscape continues to evolve in New York City, from new support for mom-and-pop businesses to how artificial intelligence technology weaves it's way into shaping the future of businesses and to ensure local businesses the Bronx don't get left behind. Bronx Chamber of Commerce President Lisa Sorin spoke with News 12's Heather Fordham about policy decisions and initiatives that are shaping everyday life for businesses and people.
East 132nd Street in the South Bronx is finally getting the attention advocates have pushed for. News 12 spoke with U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who visited the neighborhood. She discussed her meeting with community groups who are pushing to transform a neglected stretch of waterfront in Port Morris and issues at the forefront of the district she serves.
New York City is getting into the grocery business. Mayor Zohran Mamdani made good on a campaign promise by announcing the opening of the first city-run grocery store in East Harlem. The stores will offer subsidized staples, like eggs and bread. The plan is to open one store in each borough by the end of his term in 2029. The project has a $70 million budget, with $30 million going to El Marqueta on Park Avenue. Some small business owners, however, worry it could hurt local bodegas. Mamdani says the stores will be in neighborhoods that see the highest rates of food insecurity and reliance on food assistance.
