Welcome back everyone. Election day is just about six weeks away now. And on the minds of voters, many key moments from former President Trump's campaign rally at the Nassau Coliseum and he told voters he plans on restoring state and local tax deductions known better as salt despite being the one who capped those deductions to $10,000. In 2017, I will cut taxes for families, small businesses and workers including restoring the salt deduction, saving thousands of dollars. And another was a claim that he made on stage that New York is a battleground state and is up for grabs this election. The claim came just hours before a new CN. A research poll was released which shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading the Republican nominee by 13 points among likely New York voters. Now joining us right now is New York State Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs. Thanks so much for being here with us a lot to discuss this week. Well, thanks for having me, of course. So let's dive right into that issue of whether or not New York is in fact a battleground state. We just spoke with the Nassau County chair Uh, Joseph Cairo about this. He believes that New York is in play. What are your thoughts about New York possibly going red this November? Well, I, I think that's a fantasy. Um, you know, you take a look at the poll is one thing but, you know, we're out in the streets so we're all over. We've got 37 field offices around the state, um, 90 field directors and the information we're getting is that it's looking very good for the Democratic ticket this year. When we talk, when you saw what happened there with the rally, you know, you were out there protesting, uh, prior to the rally. I know that was, uh, with some of the people outside in the free speech zone. And when we spoke earlier in the week, you mentioned that every moment that he spends in New York, he's not spending in one of the swing states. So, what exactly are you looking for? And what do you think now after the rally after it's happened? What do you think of how it went? Well, look, just listen to Donald Trump and listen to what he says this, this nonsense that he's going to restore the salt deduction. I don't want anybody to forget. He's the one that capped it at $10,000 costing, uh, property tax payers here in Nassau County and in Suffolk County, uh, thousands and thousands of dollars every year for the past seven years. So now all of a sudden he wants your vote and he's coming to be the hero to restore that, which he, uh, took away. So, it's, it's nonsense and, and some of the divisive things that he says, uh, what he is, uh, states that he's planning to do in this country, uh, you know, should he become president again, I think, are both frightening and in some ways disgusting. It's just not what Nassau County and Suffolk County are looking for. Face it. We're a modern, uh, county. In other words, uh, voters go sometimes to the right sometimes to the left by a little but they, they tend to tack toward the middle and Donald Trump is the extreme and it was good to see, uh, Anthony di esposito and Nick Lalo, the two members of Congress si side by side, shoulder to shoulder with Donald Trump because that's how they've been voting in the Congress. They're, they're trying to tell voters today when they wanna get re-elected that they are moderates. But the truth of the fact, uh truth of the matter is, uh, they've been with Donald Trump and his extreme agenda and now they own it, uh standing with him on that stage uh at the Nassau Coliseum a couple of days ago, you mentioned the salt tax there. And I think a lot of Long Islanders are very interested to see what's going to happen with that cap of that tax. I wanna play something for you right now. This is from, uh, Congressman Andrew Gabor. He Garino, he was discussing with us what was happening in the future of the tax. Let's take a listen. There's also members, uh, from Texas and Ohio and other states. Uh, that 10 years ago. Yeah, they didn't care about the $10,000 cap, but now they're seeing their property taxes, they're seeing their income taxes in those states. Uh, some of those states increase, uh, to where the 10,000 cap is not enough. Now, you mentioned there, Anthony de esposito and Nick Lo Loda as well. This is an issue that obviously congress is gonna have to vote on, uh, in the future. But how much of an issue is this for the democratic candidates that you're running on the ballots and how much for voters right now when they make their ultimate decision? Well, one of the biggest issues, um, on Long Island is affordability and one of the biggest impacts to affordability for homeowners, uh, the property tax. So, you know, here you have these Republicans who say that, yes, we should, uh, you know, um, remove the, uh, the limitation and give us back the deduction. They have the majority in the house. They've had opportunities to do it. They've said they're going to do it. They haven't gotten it done because of the, the, uh, sense of, uh Mike Johnson, the speaker and the majority of the Republicans is they don't want it done. Now, Donald Trump has a lot of control. If he wanted this done, he'd pick up the phone just, he killed the immigration bipartisan agreement. Uh, a couple of months ago, he'll pick up the phone and call the Republican leadership and direct them as to what to do. We could have this deduction back tomorrow. So, where is it? Uh, they're a bunch of phonies, you know, they come election time, make all sorts of promises but uh they just never come to pass. Do they? Jay two years ago, things did not go the way Democrats wanted here in, in New York state, the party came under a lot of fire for that. What are, what is being done differently this election cycle around? What are you, how have you changed your approach if at all? Well, remember something, it was a very different, different uh election year two years ago. And let's also remember we're talking about four members of Congress, uh that, that we didn't win those races. We had the super majority in the assembly, the state, the state Senate. Uh you know, the governor did, did win an election all the top of the ticket. One Schumer and the rest. So, you know, it wasn't as terrible as everybody's making it out to be, but we did lose those four seats. Well, why let's start for starters the, the um red freaking debacle that happened two years ago. Put our primaries and we had primaries in each of those. Uh at the end of August Republicans didn't have that. They had about 12 weeks ahead of us. We had about nine weeks to go before the election and we started after the primary with no money in the bank for any of them. So it was a tougher year. Of course, we were dealing with uh the political environment surrounding the bail reform thought it was unfair. But the Republicans, you know, uh painted it as some terrible, you know, Democratic uh uh uh reason for the reason that the Democratic Party caused all, all the crime to increase a lot of nonsense. But, uh you know, voters bought it different political environment this year and now this year, of course, never mind the field offices and everything else that were doing. It's a presidential election, you'll see 70% plus of voters come out was way lower than that two years ago in an off year election. So I think it's gonna be, uh you know, very different for a variety of reasons, but uh not the least of which is, you know, the circumstances are different. In NASA. Outrage has sparked in the Hempstead community over the removal of their former school superintendent. Now religious leaders and members of the community are now calling for her to be reinstated. News world's Tama Potan has the story. This makes no sense. It's unfair. It's unjustifiable. Hempstead religious leaders and community members demanding action stand united demanding that Miss Regina Armstrong be returned to her position as superintendent immediately. They want Regina Armstrong reinstated. She was ousted from her role as Hempstead school superintendent just days into the new school year. The board says it lost faith in Armstrong. It's as if the decision makers are trying to go backwards into the chaotic situation that once was leaders say the decision to remove Armstrong could set this back. They credit her with raising graduation rates. As Nuv reported in 2015, Hempstead schools went into state mandated Receivership because of underperformance and low graduation rates. At that time, only 51% of students graduated in 2022. That number climbed to 86%. Tonight. The district said in a statement that Armstrong who was superintendent for five years has been placed on administrative leave of absence with pay and it cannot comment further. Community members who also came here to tonight's board meeting to make their plea directly to board members say the very future of this district is at stake and they say they don't plan to stop speaking out. And again, that was Tama Ponton reporting. Well, we usually take the train for your commute. The MT A is going to be voting on its five year $68 billion capital plan this week. And that could mean some changes for the railroad. The proposal would, could possibly pull L I double R trains from the eighties off of the tracks. The plan is to retire the M three fleet and then buy new rail cars by 2030. It would also start electrifying tracks in eastern Suffolk and pay for accessibility upgrades even though the MT A board will vote, a state panel will get the final say and $2.3 billion in tax relief will soon be on the way to more New Yorkers that includes 736 million for Long Island. The state's star program provides property tax relief to eligible homeowners and senior citizens throughout the state. Governor Hochul says more than 596,000 Long Islanders have already received their star tax relief and more will receive those benefits in the coming weeks. All right.
