Students at North Babylon High School were met with tighter security protocols Wednesday morning after two alarming incidents took place on campus the day before. While both incidents occurred on the same day, police have determined they are unrelated.
The first incident involved two 16-year-olds who were arrested for trespassing. Authorities confirmed that neither of the individuals attends North Babylon High School. In response, the district implemented a new policy requiring students to show ID before entering the building. Those without IDs must now use a designated entrance where school staff will verify their identities.
“I honestly thought it was pretty crazy. I can’t believe somebody would try to do that,” said Marvin, a senior at the school. “Definitely from another school as well.”
Later the same day, a separate and deeply troubling discovery was made inside the school. Swastikas were found drawn on a storage cabinet in a classroom. Suffolk County police have assigned the Hate Crimes Unit to investigate the graffiti.
“Seeing that as a person of color is disgusting,” said Diana Romero, a junior at North Babylon High School.
Police clarified that there is no connection between the trespassing incident and the hateful symbols. No injuries were reported during the trespassing arrest.
In a statement, Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Graham wrote, “Additional measures are being implemented to prevent unauthorized access to campus and to ensure a safe environment for everyone.”
The district shared the letter from the superintendent to parents with News 12:
May 13, 2025
Dear North Babylon School Community,
I am writing to inform you about two serious incidents that occurred today at North Babylon High School and to outline the steps we are taking to ensure the continued safety and well-being of our students, staff and community.
As a follow-up to my message to high school parents and families this morning, two unauthorized individuals were found on campus just before the start of the school day. School staff responded quickly and appropriately, and the police were immediately called. Officers from the Suffolk County Police Department arrived promptly and the individuals were apprehended without incident. Thankfully, no one was harmed. We are grateful for the swift action taken by our staff and the prompt response of the First Precinct.
As a result of the incident, and as part of our ongoing commitment, we are reviewing and strengthening our security protocols. Additional measures are being implemented to prevent unauthorized access to campus and to ensure a safe environment for everyone. High school families received a message from Dr. Klomp earlier today outlining new procedures to the high school’s morning entrance procedures.
In a separate and deeply troubling incident, a swastika was discovered written on a cabinet in a classroom at North Babylon High School. We take this act of hate very seriously. The symbol has no place in our school or society. The police have been notified and are actively investigating this matter. Acts of hate and intolerance will not be tolerated, and we are committed to fostering a school climate that is inclusive, respectful and safe for all.
We recognize that these incidents may be unsettling, and we want to assure you that the safety, security and wellness of our students are our top priorities.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership as we work together to maintain a secure and supportive learning environment.
Regards,
Kenneth E. Graham, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
