Police in Cumberland County are mourning the loss of a police detective who was fatally shot during a home invasion Tuesday night in Bridgeton, police said.

"It is with deep sorrow that the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office reports the passing of Prosecutor's Office Detective Sergeant Monica Mosley," Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said in a statement.

The Bridgeton Police Department says officers were called to the 600-block of Buckshutem Road around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in response to reports of several people kicking in a front door of a home. When police arrived and entered the house, they found Mosley, 51, suffering from a gunshot wound. Police say she died on the scene.

Additional information obtained during the course of the investigation led Bridgeton police, along with New Jersey state troopers, to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where they found and detained one person who was being treated for a gunshot wound. The suspect's name has not been released and no charges have been filed, Bridgeton police said in a statement.

Following the news of Mosely's death, law enforcement officers in the county began offering condolences.

"Our thoughts are with the family and colleagues of Sergeant Monica Mosely of the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office," Vineland police said in a social media post.

In Gloucester County, Sheriff Jonathan M. Sammons said Mosley's death is a reminder of the dangers police face.

"Her untimely passing as a result of injuries sustained during a home invasion is a devastating reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day. We honor her service and sacrifice, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time," the sheriff said.

Bridgeton Police Chief Michael Gaimari said he's known Mosley for most of her career and called her death "truly devastating."

"All of law enforcement feels the loss deeply, but our hearts go out to her family and friends including those that worked with her daily," Gaimari said.

According to the Cumberland County prosecutor, Mosley began her career at the prosecutor's office in 2006 as a paralegal specialist. She became a county detective in 2009.

"She served our community with honor, dignity and respect before her untimely passing," Webb-McRae said.

Mosley worked in several departments within the agency, including the Special Victims Unit, Community Justice Unit and the Professional Standards Unit where she worked as a supervisor.

"Sergeant Mosley was a constant friend and role model for all those with whom she served and led in the law enforcement community throughout Cumberland County and beyond. She will be missed more than words can detail, but she will never be forgotten by her CCPO family," the prosecutor added. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Sergeant Mosley's family at this most difficult time. We are resolute in making sure that Monica is remembered for who she was, how she lived and how she touched each of our lives."

Webb-Mcrae thanked police in Bridgeton, Cape May County and the New Jersey State Police for their work on the case. The incident remains under investigation.
