A couple in their 80s was beaten and robbed while in their home, according to Union Township police.

Police say the suspects stole the couple's Audi that was parked in the driveway at around 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Officials say the couple was eating breakfast and waiting for their granddaughter to be dropped off.

When the wife opened the front door, she saw men dressed in black from head to toe on her front porch, according to officials.

The victim’s daughter, who wants her family to remain anonymous, says her mom hit the suspects with a newspaper, telling them to get out of the house.

"They were thinking they are fighting for their lives because people are trying to break into their house…She argued with them right there. And in her screaming and arguing with them, my father came to the front door,” the daughter said. “My father stayed fighting outside. They pushed my mom down and ran into the house.”

The daughter says her dad suffered facial fractures.

“His arms were bloody, his face was bloody. His nose punched,” she said.

Union Township Deputy Police Chief Scott Breslow says the thieves had been driving a BMW stolen from Livingston, which was later found burned in Newark.

Police say the home invasion wasn’t their first stop.

“They were in Summit, they were in Chatham. They did an attempted burglary in Chatham at 1 a.m. They were in Hillside probably 20 minutes before us,” Breslow said.

In a separate case from Wednesday, officers arrested 18-year Jaquann Scott, of Newark who was trying to break into a home in the Andrew's Park section of town. He was caught while his partner got away, according to police.

The homeowner was inside and called police after hearing someone trying to break in.

Police tell News 12 that in this case, they’re still searching for the Audi.

“I mean it’s a disgrace. They’re cowards to come and do this to like elderly people living here for 40 years,” the victims’ daughter said.
