A man has been arrested and charged after allegedly damaging municipal traffic-monitoring equipment installed along South Street to curb illegal parking.

Morristown recently launched a pilot initiative with Municipal Parking Services, utilizing “Safety Sticks”—automated devices designed to monitor and enforce no-parking zones to improve pedestrian and motorist safety following frequent community complaints.

During the early morning hours of Friday, Sept. 5, Morristown officers discovered two damaged safety sticks lying in the roadway. Surveillance footage from the previous night showed two individuals walking along South Street around 11:19 p.m. when a male suspect forcibly dislodged the equipment, rendering it inoperable.

Following a public appeal for assistance, police identified and arrested the male suspect, charging him with fourth-degree criminal mischief, an indictable offense.

Department officials thanked community members for providing tips that led to the quick resolution of the case.
