A narcotics and firearms bust in New Windsor involving dozens of local police, state and federal authorities has neighbors on edge.
New Windsor police say they seized three AR-15-style assault rifles, 400 grams of cocaine, a scale and $3,900 in cash during the execution of a search warrant at a home on Stonecrest Drive Thursday.
Authorities say two police K-9’s positively identified the drugs and firearms in the home and that 30-year-old Lazurus Rodriguez was arrested and charged with felony criminal possession of a controlled substance.
A woman outside the home spoke to News 12, saying she lives there and that Rodriguez is her son.
“The people inside this house had nothing to do with it. He’s not guilty until he’s guilty,” says the woman.
She says the money seized is from Rodriguez’s tax returns and that the firearms were legally owned but was unable to provide proof when News 12 asked.
Neighbors alerted News 12 to the case but asked not to be identified, saying they were worried when they saw more than 30 police cars during the raid.
“FBI was here. The dogs were here. They were in the house,” say one neighbor who asked not to be identified. “There’s always something going on in that house.”
When News 12 was there, two people came out of the residence yelling, cursing and threatening our reporter and photographer.
“There have been cars coming and going from that house for years and times when people were found nodded out behind the wheel,” says another neighbor.
FBI, state police, the U.S Postal Inspection Service and City of Newburgh police were also involved in the raid.
Authorities say the seizure and arrest is the result of a long-term investigation into illegal possession and distribution of narcotics by an individual living at the residence.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office says the case is next scheduled to go before a grand jury.
News 12 reached out to Rodriguez’s attorney but hasn’t heard back.
