Phillipsburg officials have declared a state of local emergency due to sinkholes that have occurred in several areas.

Crews responded to a sinkhole on Summit Avenue near the intersection of Lewis Street. Officials say the hole has been secured to ensure public safety.

Summit Avenue is closed from Fillmore Street to Chambers Street. The intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street is fully closed.

Phillipsburg police are telling motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area and use the detours.

The sinkhole also impacted water service for some Aqua New Jersey customers. Phillipsburg officials say that service has since been restored, but some customers may have discolored water with reduced pressure.

No injuries were reported.
