Students took part in a panel discussion Wednesday about the impact of cellphones, social media and technology in schools.
The discussion was hosted by the state teacher’s union.
Teens spoke about the need for balance when it comes to cellphones use in school.
“If young people don't have a voice in this room, it's just adults who came from a different generation and don't understand living at a time when technology is a priority," said Michael Demasi, a ninth grader at Patchogue Medford High School.
Educators who News 12 spoke with say the leading issue in schools today is students being distracted by cellphones.
As News 12 has reported, Gov. Kathy Hochul is pushing to restrict smartphone use in schools.
The union is holding meetings across the state to hear ideas.
