A New York Waterway ferry struck a pier while departing the Belford terminal, shattering windows and sending glass into a passenger area as county officials raised concerns about safety and communication.
Passengers aboard the Molly Pitcher ferry told News 12 New Jersey they heard a loud bang as the vessel left the dock. Video provided by riders showed shattered lower-level windows and holes in the glass.
One passenger said broken glass crashed into the seating area. Riders said the ferry continued to New York City rather than returning to the terminal.
Monmouth County Commissioner Tom Arnone said he was "concerned 100%" and called the incident "very unfortunate," adding that safety is the county's top priority and that officials wanted to ensure residents were receiving safe and reliable service.
Middletown Mayor Tony Perry said videos from passengers made it difficult not to be concerned. Perry questioned why the ferry continued toward New York after the incident, saying, "your gut tells you maybe you should turn back around," though he noted he did not know what approvals or procedures may have been followed.
New York Waterway said no injuries were reported, passenger safety remains its top priority and the Molly Pitcher has been removed from service for repairs. The company also said it remains in contact with county officials.
