A Passaic man was charged with driving while intoxicated and drug offenses after police said a passenger helped him bypass an ignition interlock device before a traffic stop in Bloomingdale.

Bloomingdale police said an officer spotted a Dodge minivan traveling at a high rate of speed around 9 p.m. Monday as part of the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

The officer followed the minivan and saw smoke coming from the hood as the vehicle struggled to stay in its lane, according to police. The officer then pulled it over.

The driver, identified as 28-year-old Edwin Mejia, had several passengers in the vehicle, at least one of whom was a juvenile, police said.

Police said the officer smelled alcohol and cannabis while speaking with Mejia. Mejia allegedly said he had not been drinking because he was required to use an ignition interlock device that would prevent the vehicle from starting if alcohol was detected.

Police said Mejia appeared impaired and was arrested after field sobriety tests.

Police searched the minivan and found alcohol containers, cannabis, drug-packaging materials and a large quantity of oxycodone that was not prescribed to Mejia. Police said the pills were packaged in a way that indicated they were intended for distribution.

Police said they later learned that a sober passenger had provided the breath sample needed to start the vehicle through its ignition interlock device.

Mejia refused to provide breath samples at police headquarters, according to police.

He was charged with offenses including DWI, circumventing an ignition interlock device, refusing to submit a breath sample, DWI with a minor passenger, possession of open alcohol and cannabis containers, drug possession and possession with intent to distribute.

Mejia was later turned over to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office HUB. Police said the passengers were released to a responsible adult.
