The Passaic Fire Department is hosting its sixth annual Junior Fire Academy, a weeklong program designed to teach kids about the fire service while emphasizing safety, discipline and teamwork.
About 70 children signed up for this year’s academy, with more than 50 taking part in the training.
The kids are getting hands-on experience with different aspects of the job, including learning about engine and ladder companies, taking part in simulated smoke exercises, and practicing search-and-rescue techniques.
Some exercises even have the kids wearing blindfolds so they can learn to rely on their other senses while searching for and rescuing mannequins.
Fire safety is another major focus. Firefighters are teaching the kids about smoke detectors, fire prevention and the dangers of playing with matches or stoves. The program also includes physical activities such as pushups, squats and jumping jacks.
Water safety is also part of the academy. The group is scheduled to visit Dover Park to learn about water rescue, including how to use throw ropes and flotation equipment.
Firefighter Marcus Kenner says the goal goes beyond inspiring future firefighters. He says the department wants the kids to develop discipline, leadership skills and healthy habits they can carry with them throughout their lives.
The Junior Fire Academy runs for one week each August, with the program typically taking place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is handled through the Passaic Recreation Department.
