A unique program at Norwalk Public Schools is providing students educational opportunities focusing on marine science.

The district recently began the third year of their marine science pathways program.

The program is a kindergarten-through 12th-grade initiative created in partnership with The Maritime Aquarium.

Students complete rigorous coursework, such as learning about marine trades and engineering, plus local and global marine biology. They also participate in hands-on learning, which includes building ships. Educators say it's been a game-changer for students and staff to learn more about the Long Island Sound. "It's our area, it's Long Island Sound it's in our backyard. It engages both the students and the staff in learning more about this very valuable resource. It helps them to learn about science in a way that's really meaningful and gives them ownership," said John Foldeak, marine science coordinator at Norwalk Public Schools. Rep. Jim Himes' office said program funding was made possible because of $1.3 million in federal community project funding he secured in 2023.
