Parents of young lacrosse athletes say they're out of thousands of dollars after the owners of Rebels Lacrosse LLC and Blatant LLC said they are filing for bankruptcy and shutting down the clubs.
The Hodge family, whose son is on one of the teams, say they spent thousands of dollars on gear and tournaments. The family also says many of the items never showed up.
Frank Hodge, who shared emails with News 12, says they were told the team was in a great spot. Just weeks later, the organization is gone and his son doesn't have a team.
"You don't want to break his heart,” Hodge said. “But, you know, you do what you can at the time and try and keep him busy."
Owner Michael Brennan was unavailable for an on camera interview. Instead, he gave News 12 a statement which reads:
“First and foremost, we are still heartbroken over the events that have unfolded over the last week forcing us to shut down both the Rebels Lacrosse Club and Blatant organizations. Given only a few hours to agree to an interview, or issue a statement, this is all we can offer at this time...
We never had any intention of shutting down our business after 15 years, as we were currently in the middle of our 8th season with Rebels Lacrosse.
We have received an outpouring of support from former athletes, parents, and those who truly know us best, for the last 15 years of our work, and are truly grateful for that. Please know that we have been, and will continue to, work diligently to ensure that all families affected by this closure will have an opportunity to play the sport they love.
The past several days have been extremely difficult on ourselves, and even moreso on our families who have always been there to support us.”
He also told News 12 they are working to help the families affected find a new opportunity to play lacrosse.
Although many people say they're shocked and angry at this sudden closure, players and other parents say they want everyone to know how much they loved their coaches and teams.
Although lacrosse in expensive, some parents say it’s worth every penny.
