Opening arguments are set to begin at this morning in the murder trial of Paul Caneiro. The Monmouth County man was charged with killing his brother, as well as his brother's wife and their two children in 2018.
According to prosecutors, the 59-year-old is accused of killing his former business partner and brother Keith, Keith's wife Jennifer, and their two children, Jesse and Sophia on Nov. 20, 2018. Police say he then set fire to his own Ocean Township home and Keith's Colts Neck mansion to cover up his crimes and make it appear as though the family was targeted. Prosecutors also say his crimes were motivated by money.
Jury selection in the case wrapped up last week, with attorneys whittling down a pool of thousands, to 12 jurors and 4 alternates.
The trial was previously delayed when Caneiro's lawyer argued that some of the evidence, including home security video, was gathered illegally. The New Jersey Supreme Court rejected that argument.
Opening arguments are expected to begin at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Marc Lemieux in Monmouth County Superior Courthouse in Freehold.
