One of 5 men stabbed in Penn Station knife attack suffered traumatic brain injury
One of the five men stabbed during a knife attack inside Penn Station on Sunday suffered a traumatic brain injury, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
Hector Deleon, 51, was arraigned Friday for allegedly carrying out the violent spree inside the station Sunday evening, the day before people flooded the adjoining stadium for Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
“This was a terrifying attack in the middle of Penn Station during an incredibly busy time in New York City," said DA Alvin Bragg.
Prosecutors say the men were all stabbed in the head or neck.
One of those men suffered a puncture wound to the left temple, piercing his temporal lobe. The wound caused a cerebral hemorrhage and a traumatic brain injury, according to court documents.
Two additional men suffered stab wounds to the face, while the remaining two were stabbed in the throat.
Prosecutors say Deleon also allegedly attempted to attack two other people.
Amtrak Police Department Officer Azizur Chowdhury responded to the scene. He and other Amtrak officers confronted Deleon. The 51-year-old dropped the knife and was arrested.
Deleon faces a slew of charges, including seven counts of attempted murder, five counts of assault and six counts of attempted assault.
The DA's office says the defense requested a 730 exam to determine if Deleon is mentally competent to stand trial.
"We encourage witnesses or anyone who has additional information about this case to call 1-800-331-0008," said Bragg.
Deleon is due back in court on June 29.
