John Harbaugh was officially introduced Tuesday as the new head coach of the New York Giants, taking over a franchise coming off a 4-13 season and three straight years without a playoff appearance.
Harbaugh spent 18 seasons as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, where he led the team to 180 regular-season wins, 13 playoff victories and a Super Bowl championship.
Speaking at his introductory press conference at the Giants’ training facility in East Rutherford, Harbaugh said he is ready to take on the challenge.
“I wanted this job, to be on the biggest stage, in the biggest sport, I know the challenges, I understand the expectations, I know the fans are hungry for a winner. We're here with one mission, to become, to earn the right to be called world champions in New York." Harbaugh said.
Several members of Harbaugh’s family were in attendance, including his wife and parents. He quoted his father while describing the mindset he plans to bring to the organization, saying, “attack each day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind.”
Harbaugh told News 12 that improving the team will begin with evaluating what is already in place.
“We’ll find out as we go, I mean, there’s strengths and weakness. Everything is a weakness, everything is a strength - but what we really have to do is just try and get better every single day,” he said.
Harbaugh said he wants to build a team that is physical and tough, while also playing disciplined football. He did not officially name potential assistant coaches, but said staff decisions will focus on people who love the game of football.
Asked about relocating from Baltimore to the tri-state, Harbaugh said the adjustment has been smooth.
“Well, you know I don’t really know about culture differences or anything like that - but I know the fans here love football, and I know - there’s a little bit of traffic,” he laughed. “I’m excited, I’m excited for the football. I’m excited for the guys, I’m excited for the people in the organization. I’m excited for the ownership. I’m excited for the coaches that we’re going to bring in here. I can’t wait to get started on building the staff. I’m fired up.”
