The Passaic City School District is cutting 51 jobs, according to district officials.
Nineteen teachers and support staff are among the employees within the district who will lose their jobs, according to the president of the teacher's union, the Passaic Education Association.
“They haven’t identified any of the staffers nor the positions that they’re cutting, which I find interesting," said union president Frank Koterba.
Koterba says he’s against the job cuts because that would mean a total of 116 positions will be open when it's taken into account that there will be 65 job vacancies at the start of the school year, along with a number of staffers who have retired.
“We need people in front of our children. At the end of the day, the continued budget cuts are going to increase class sizes. We’re going to have students that are not getting the proper resources they need,” Koterba said.
The decision to slash jobs was made by Superintendent Sandra Montañez-Diodonet, who said at a recent public meeting that the changes were needed to trim the budget.
She said the decisions were based on a falling enrollment and less state aid.
Koterba questions that rationale, considering Passaic is getting $271 million from Trenton for 2026, which was reduced by $899,000 from 2025.
News 12 reached out to the superintendent’s office for a comment but did not hear back.
