The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office says that lithium-ion batteries were likely the cause of a fire that killed a 92-year-old woman in Stafford Township early Friday morning.
Firefighters were called to a home on Yeoman Road around 1:20 a.m. for reports of a fire. Officials say two people were able to escape the home but were injured. They were taken to two separate hospitals in Philadelphia to be treated. Officials say they were listed in critical condition when they arrived at the hospitals.
A third person, identified as 92-year-old Betty Matero, was not able to escape and died from her injuries.
Officials say the fire was ruled accidental and most likely caused by a failure of lithium-ion batteries.
Officials say Matero died from smoke inhalation.
