The record stretch of dry weather has some towns discouraging shooting off fireworks in celebration. When it's this dry, any ember can ignite quickly, and officials say fireworks pose an extreme danger at this time. Diwali is traditionally celebrated with fireworks.
Officials from South Brunswick, Basking Ridge, Piscataway, Montville and East Brunswick are urging residents to not shoot off fireworks.
Edison put on a Drone show this past Saturday. Drones lit up the 22-acre park with over 100,000 lights during the festival at Papaianni Park which is believed to be the largest in the state. Usually there is a major fireworks show, but not this year.
The Parsippany mayor says Diwali is one of the biggest holidays of the year for the town and that the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety has also issued a memo restricting issuing fire permits, including for fireworks, during these current restrictions.
All of New Jersey is in the highest fire level of restrictions. We could see some rain by the end of the week, but it's not going to be enough to loosen these restrictions.
