The 62nd Precinct is increasing security at houses of worship for the High Holiday season.
The NYPD said on Monday that it designated the area on Bay Parkway from 78th Street to 79th Street as a "safe corridor."
The other safe corridor is located between 20th Avenue and 79th Street, also along Bay Parkway. Members of the Jewish community tell News 12 they are thankful for this extra protection.
"I think a lot of people do worry about it," said Shaul Murciano. "I definitely think it's something people should worry about. I think things are starting to get a little unsafe."
This announcement of safe corridors comes as antisemitic incidents are on the rise in New York City. According to police data as of Sept. 1, there have been 438 reported cases of hate crimes this year, compared to 332 cases reported in 2023. The NYPD says this increase is largely fueled by a surge in
"anti Jewish incidents."
