Under a tent, in the parking lot of the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, solace filled the air, as city leaders, family, friends and fellow officers honored the life of NYPD Detective Didarul Islam.

Islam was one of four people killed last year when a gunman went on a rampage inside a Midtown Manhattan building.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch joined leaders of the 47th Precinct and NYPD officers for the first anniversary wreath laying in memory of Detective Didarul Islam.

Detective Islam was killed while working an off-duty security job at a building on Park Ave in Manhattan on the evening of July 28,2025.

He was in the lobby when the gunman stormed through the entrance, Islam was the first victim.

Islam was a father of two children. His wife who was pregnant at the time, gave birth to their third child three weeks later, on Aug. 17, 2025.

“He placed himself in front of an assault rifle so that his fellow New Yorkers could escape to safety, it is an act of courage, unfathomable to most,” said Mayor Mamdani who spoke at the memorial ceremony.

Islam immigrated from Bangladesh and was assigned to the 47th Precinct where he served the NYPD for three and a half years.

Authorities believe the gunman, identified as Shane Tamura intended to target the NFL headquarters but ended up in the wrong section of the building on the 33rd floor when he was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say Tamura traveled from Las Vegas to New York City to carry out the attack.

Islam’s legacy is driving change in Albany, where the governor signed the Didarul Islam Recruitment Act into law in May. The measure allows officers transitioning from other city public safety roles to apply that prior time to their retirement benefits.

Wesley LePartner, Julia Hyman, and Aland Etienne also lost their lives in the attack.

Etienne, a 46-year-old security guard, 32BJ SEIU member and father of two is also driving change. The Aland Etienne Safety and Security Act was passed by city council back in December.

The legislation guarantees minimum standards for all private security guards, ensuring the same compensation package as private security officers who are employed through city contracts.
