NYPD cancels Madison Square Garden watch parties, cites safety concerns
The NYPD has cancelled watch parties at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in an effort to keep people safe.
Police tell News 12 this decision was made after continuous safety issues at the watch parties outside of MSG.
One example of that, they say, was Thursday night's watch party, with over 6,000 people in attendance.
The NYPD said in a statement that the crowds were "rough," with people jumping over police barriers and throwing objects like glass bottles into crowds.
Six people were arrested at the Thursday event, according to authorities.
Bronx Council Member Oswald Feliz says he is against this decision.
"As a city, we should be creating not eliminating ways of connecting New Yorkers. We should be encouraging residents to enjoy their vibrant city and its teams," said Feliz.
The NYPD says they will not support any additional watch parties outside of MSG but will continue to review requests to support parties at alternate sites.
