New York City Public Schools partnered with Street Soccer USA to renovate and build fields across the city.
Luis Torres, principal of CS 55, says this program is life-changing.
"I like to tell people that it's saving lives for a lot of our children. Had they not had this stadium or soccer field, they would be out in the streets doing other things and who knows what could have happened with them. So, this allows for our children to have a safe space to play and engage in the community," he says.
CS55 students aren't the only ones who get to enjoy, over 24 schools participate in programs and games at this field.
"This is impacting the whole community, not only the school. And we do community programs. We have Saturday programs. This has allowed our school to be available to the community six, six days a week," says Torres.
The sound of kids cheering on their teammates is a sound that Rohan Allen, program manager for Street Soccer USA, says he will never get tired of.
"We noticed that when kids play a team sport, they feel empowered. They give, they feel confident. And we really see growth through their leadership in different areas," he says.
Highlighting the impact this program has on communities just like this one.
"We're a nonprofit organization trying to change the world through soccer," says Allen.
