The New York City Council passed a bill for homeowners of certain residential buildings to receive official NYC waste bins at no cost. The 35-gallon bins, which typically cost around $45, and the 45-gallon bins, priced at about $53, will be provided free of charge to qualifying homeowners starting Aug. 1. Homeowners who have recently purchased a bin will be reimbursed. To qualify, homeowners must own one- or two-family homes and be enrolled in the New York STAR or Enhanced STAR tax benefit programs. The Department of Sanitation initially began charging for the bins, but with the passage of the bill, many of the eligible residents can look forward to a cleaner, more organized neighborhood. DSNY tells News 12 the NYC waste bin is currently the most affordable option for its quality on the market and is reviewing the newly passed legislation.
