Gov. Kathy Hochul responded to comments made by White House Border Czar Tom Homan promising a surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in New York City.
Earlier this
week, Homan said the planned ICE deployment was a direct response to a new set of laws that Governor Hochul signed banning ice from using local jails.
“We don't want our jails being used for any purpose other than local law enforcement purposes. It's not their job to be ICE detention centers either,” said Hochul.
The new laws don’t stop ICE from taking people into custody after they are convicted and serve state prison time.
