The debate between FIFA and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill continues over who will pay the approximate $48 billion in transportation costs to get to and from the stadium in East Rutherford during World Cup matches.
The governor says she inherited the agreement that calls for FIFA contributes nothing towards transportation costs yet will make about $11 billion overall.
FIFA officials say they are surprised by the governor's comments.
FIFA argues the initial agreement in 2018 called for free transportation for all fans to matches, adding, that agreement was later changed in 2023 to say:
"All match ticket holders and accredited individuals shall be able to access transport (public or additionally planned transport) at cost to allow travel to stadiums on match days."
A "Regional Mobility Plan" briefing is scheduled for later this morning and will include NJTransit leadership.
It's hoped that more clarity on transportation costs to fans will be made available at that time.
