NJ man arrested in connection to Maryland Walmart arson case
Police say they arrested a Berlin, New Jersey, man who they say was wanted in connection to fire set inside a Maryland Walmart.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office said Anthony J. Rhodes, 36, was taken into custody by Berlin Township police on Thursday after investigators identified him as the suspect.
Rhodes is charged with arson and explosive-related offenses, including arson and manufacturing an explosive device. He was being held at the Camden County Correctional Facility on Saturday night, pending extradition to Maryland.
Authorities say the fire was reported April 29 at the Walmart on East Pulaski Highway in Elkton.
Investigators say the suspect entered the store wearing a mask and carrying a backpack, then used camping fuel and fireworks to set a fire in a grocery cart near children’s clothing.
The suspect broke into a jewelry counter and stole nearly $10,000 in jewelry as customers and employees evacuated, investigators said.
Officials say direct fire damage was estimated at about $5,000, but Walmart reported nearly $10 million in inventory losses due to smoke, soot and remediation.
